Peak MT offers a number of development courses for existing national governing body award holders. Regardless of whether you are required to do some form of continuing professional development as part of your employment, or you would just like an update, our CPD workshops will be of interest. See below for details of our one-day workshops.
An imaginative look at what can be done within the remit of the SPA. Including teaching progressions, leading (without leading!), additional rope systems and coaching models - the aim is to give participants a range of additional skills to maximise the value and extent to which they can operate as SPA holders.
This course offers a thorough and detailed look at the rope systems commonly used by the modern SPA holder, and the associated pros and cons of each. We aim to broaden and strengthen your rigging skills and efficiency and the day will also incorporate a review of problem solving for the SPA holder.
Keeping your ropework skills fresh is actually pretty hard (unless you're prone to a lot of epics!) so this course is ideal for existing MLs who wish to "top-up" their skills, or trainees who want a bit more input prior to assessment. The course covers all the skills necessary to implement safe and successful negotiation of hazardous ground. Ropework mechanics, anchor selection, belay methods, descent options and, importantly, judgement of terrain. The course would also be suitable for those keen to understand the key principles in respect to teaching these skills to others.
This course takes a look at ways to develop navigation skills in other people, by: taking a close look at navigation itself; identifying key skills; developing progressions and applying existing coaching models. Participants can expect to come away with clear templates with which to introduce, teach and develop navigation techniques. The course is designed to be applicable to the teaching of navigation at all levels.
Let's face it, we'd all love to climb better! This course is designed for anyone wanting to learn about helping people do just that. It includes: skills identification; movement analysis through observation/comparison; feedback; and recorded image use. The course looks at the ways in which both basic and more advanced coaching techniques/models can be applied to climbing movement. We also compare methods across a range of skill levels - beginner to expert - to develop a range of skills at the disposal of the participants. The course is both theoretical and practical.
This one day course looks at the issues presented to the modern working professional in the mountains and on the crags. Containing both theoretical and practical elements, participants will be taken on a "hazardous" journey through the minefields of risk assessment (both formal and dynamic), legal case studies, licensing procedures, child protection, guideline provision and remit analysis. The course aim is to empower award holders and demonstrate positively the way in which award holders can utilise their experience and skills to the ongoing delivery of adventure education.
This course is aimed at those who wish to broaden their NGB work to include the delivery of training and assessment courses. It will review the principal syllabus areas of the WGL, ML and SPA awards and give participants practical guidance as to the benchmark standards. The course also looks at training and assessment methods, including the delivery of feedback and/or results so that participants come away with a broad range of skills and strategies to cope with most of the situations that can arise.
This is an ideal refresher course for ML trainees or holders of the WGL. This is a course aimed specifically with the summer ML award standard in mind. Participants can expect to reinforce existing navigation skills but the emphasis will be on developing effective strategy choices and the selection of appropriate skills to ensure accurate, efficient and consistent navigation. Season dependent, the course will include a night navigation exercise and, at the request of participants, undertake a mock assessment.
