Congratulations! You've found our 'Bonus Track' - a little bit of fun and a lot of good tunes....

Tom Booth is a great guy, a great DJ and someone who (like us) loves his work. His upbeat mixes have provided inspiration, big grins and good times at numerous beautiful locations from the Peak District to Wales and Scotland....and here are some of them: Djtombooth on Mixcloud. Enjoy!

Specific or longer term development programmes

If you are interested in personal development longer term or are perhaps working towards a particular award, we are happy to discuss a variety of options and put together a personalised programme. This could be as short as one or two days, or a number of days spread out over a year, or longer. This is a highly individualised product but one where you potentially access the most direct and most hands-on experience alongside ourselves. In many cases we are able to introduce you to real instructional/guiding opportunities or perhaps accompany you along with your own clients. With direct supervision you get a chance for some real practice in real situations or an opportunity to discuss/review your existing methods and techniques. Because we have direct experience of both training and assessing candidates at all award levels, our constructive feedback and valuable coaching will help steer you in right direction - not just towards an assessment "pass" but towards realising your full potential as an accomplished leader, instructor or guide.

Turbo SPA

Thinking inside the remit but outside the box...

Many SPA holders work with groups whom they inevitably teach, or want to teach climbing to - certainly beyond the basic supervisory platform that the award is based on. Due to the intense time pressure of fulfilling the SPA syllabus in just two days, as most providers do, there are many ‘value added’ concepts that don’t, or rarely, get covered in enough meaningful detail to give candidates a good foundation to work from. Coaching climbing movement is one good example with valuable input now available through the BMC’s FUNdamentals programme –itself a full one day workshop.

We designed Turbo SPA to give existing SPA holders the skills and confidence to broaden their coaching options within their climbing sessions. We have done this by drawing from best practice concepts and models used in other awards such as MIA and MIC and most importantly from our own personal experience, judgement and reflection on teaching, guiding, training and assessing over the last 20 years.

The course is not an official MLTUK course but is endorsed by the MLTA and is one of the most popular CPD courses on offer. It has also received 100% positive feedback from those who have attended. Courses have been delivered in N Wales, Wye Valley, Peak District and the Lake District.

The day is practically based at a crag with attendees getting ‘hands on’ experience with all the aspects covered. All courses are delivered by one of the three Peak Mountain Training directors. You are guaranteed to be taught ‘Turbo’ by the people who designed it. Aspects covered include:

General coaching theory

Progressions from beginner to independent climber

Belaying progressions

The lead climbing game

Basic movement analysis

Abseiling progressions

Route reading

The instructor as a leader

It is useful for attendees to think in terms of a single pitch crag as a tool for teaching all aspects of climbing and incorporating the techniques learnt at SPA to provide a clear framework for their students to learn from. At the end of the day attendees should feel better prepared to get the most from their climbing session whatever the end goal.

Mountain Leader

The Mountain Leader Award allows you to take groups anywhere in the British Isles, in any mountain range on ground where the use of a rope is not intended.

The remit of the award allows you to lead groups in "summer conditions". This does not mean you are limited to the summer months, in fact you can lead people during the winter months however, you should not be going out in "winter conditions" (i.e. with snow or ice on the ground likely to require the use of axe and crampons). You can take groups wild camping in the hills and you can lead groups on easy scrambling ground. This allows a leader huge scope to take groups on interesting and exciting terrain and discover all that the British hills have to offer. The rope work enables you to deal with emergencies on steep ground, but it's your leadership and navigation skills that help you avoid these situations.

As with all the awards, environmental knowledge is a key element so throughout the course we will be helping you improve your own knowledge and look at interesting ways you can get groups excited about the environment. The award also looks at emergency procedures, the legal and moral aspects of leadership and route planning.

One of the most challenging but rewarding aspects to the award is navigation. Being able to find your way around a barren hillside, in the middle of the night and knowing exactly where you are is very satisfying!

Training Course

Training is 6 days long (consecutively or over two long weekends) and specifically involves:

Navigation (micro, macro, good & poor visibility, night time.)

Practical leadership skills in mountainous terrain inc. steeper ground

Expedition skills

Environmental knowledge

Access and conservation

Legal and moral aspects of group leadership

Planning day and multi-day expeditions

Emergency procedures inc. ropework

Our 6 day courses involve three days out of our Edale base followed by a three day expedition including one wild camp in either Snowdonia or the Lake District. We are also offering this over two 3-day weekends and, for 2012, we are trialing a 2-day weekend in the Peak District followed by a 4-day long weekend in Snowdonia. During the course all the components of the ML syllabus will be covered however the emphasis will be on the practical aspects of the award.

Assessment Course

The assessment looks at all the aspects of the award, however there is strong emphasis on navigation and leadership. During the assessment you'll be asked to lead and demonstrate your competence in mountain leadership. You need to provide all your own equipment and this will be looked at as part of the assessment. As with all our assessments your job is to show how good you are. Our job is to give you the best possible environment to show your skills.

We offer assessments over 5 consecutive days, or split over two weekends.

Prior Experience for Assessment:

Attend a training course or apply for exemption

Have logged a minimum of 40 Quality Mountain Days

Hold a valid First Aid Certificate

Further Information

Our Mountain Leader course information is available to download. If you are a group of 4 or more, we can also offer alternative course dates - please contact us for more details.

Up to date and innovative...

This one day workshop looks at the coaching of climbing movement. Over the past 5 years there has been a huge increase in the need for quality information regarding the development of climbing movement skills. The increase in climbing wall usage by climbers, especially the young, has meant people are able gain strength relatively quickly. As such, it’s important for all coaches involved in working with people to identify core movement skills and to coach these in clear and structured way. Already, the training boards within MLT are developing a coaching scheme for the Climbing Wall Award (CWA) and coaching movement technique will be an integral part of this system.

At Peak Mountain Training we believe coaching is simply about delivering information to people in a clear and structured way to improve their performance. Whether you consider yourself an instructor, guide, leader or coach, to us the job is the same: helping people to get the most from their activity.

Peak Mountain Training movement coaching workshops are bang up to date with current thinking in this evolving discipline. This workshop benefits from Neil Johnson's experience as one of only four BMC FUNdamentals coaches in Britain. This, combined with the depth and breadth of coaching experience within the Peak Mountain Training team, simply means we are confident that we are delivering the most up to date and original thoughts concerning the key elements of coaching climbing movement.

Key elements of the day:

Working with young climbers

Skills transfer

Our workshop will be practical and participants can expect a thought provoking day with plenty of climbing movement analysis. The day will also include a session on the coaching process and understanding why the way in which information is delivered is the key to helping people realise their potential.

Continuing Professional/Personal Development

Peak MT offers a number of development courses for existing national governing body award holders. Regardless of whether you are required to do some form of continuing professional development as part of your employment, or you would just like an update, our one-day CPD workshops will be of interest.

**NEWS**

For 2012 we are pleased to offer two dedicated CPD Weekends: 26th-27th May & 6th-7th October

Each day we will be running our full range of CPD courses.

'Turbo SPA'

Sometimes it helps to think outside the box. We invented the 'Turbo SPA' concept - an imaginative look at what can be done within the remit of the Single Pitch Award. Including teaching progressions, lead climbing progressions, additional rope systems and coaching models - the aim is to give participants a range of enhanced skills to maximise the value and extent to which they can operate as SPA holders. This is our flagship CPD course and has been well received by students and members of the training boards alike.

'Coaching Movement'

This course is designed for anyone wanting to learn about helping people do just that. It includes: skills identification; movement analysis through observation/comparison; feedback; and recorded image use. The course looks at the ways in which both basic and more advanced coaching techniques/models can be applied to climbing movement. We also compare methods across a range of skill levels - beginner to expert - to develop a range of skills at the disposal of the participants. The course is both theoretical and practical.

'Lumps, Bumps & Overused Needles' - Coaching Navigation

This course takes a look at ways to develop navigation skills in other people, by: taking a close look at navigation itself; identifying key skills; developing progressions and applying existing coaching models. Participants can expect to come away with clear templates with which to introduce, teach and develop navigation techniques. The course is designed to be applicable to the teaching of navigation at all levels.

Personal Mentoring
