A large proportion of WGL and ML award holders incorporate elements of introducing, teaching and developing navigation skills in the people they are out on the hill with.

Our coaching navigation course has been designed to give candidates the skills and understanding of navigation and navigation skills so that they are able to present well pitched, structured and progressive teaching opportunities that are effective in improving other peoples’ navigation.

During the workshop we will look at all aspects of navigation – from specific techniques to formulating efficient and effective strategies – and the ways in which these skills can be taught and coached at both basic through to advanced levels.

The course will look at common teaching models and give candidates a good foundation in basic teaching/coaching principles as well as how to apply these to navigation training.

The day will include some or all of the following components:

·      Introduction to teaching concepts

·      Teaching the components of navigation

·      Building and assessing navigation strategies

·      Getting the pitch right

·      Working with mixed abilities at the same time

·      Effective choice and use of terrain

·      Understanding performance and giving feedback

Already a summer Mountain Leader or Walking Group Leader but fancy an insight into leadership in the winter environment?  Perhaps you have your Winter ML training approaching and want a bit of a ‘shake-down’ on skills and techniques.

This one-day workshop offers you the chance to participate in a typical Winter Quality Mountain Day – and enjoy a chance to look at the range of personal skills necessary to operate safely and effectively as well as gain a general insight into the role of the winter mountain leader.

During the day we can expect to cover the basics of crampon and ice axe use; winter navigation; hazard awareness and avalanche considerations.  Please note that the aim of the day is to undertake a mountain journey during which time we will need to draw on a wide selection of skills.  Every candidate can expect to gain some new or brush up on existing skills, however the flavour of the day is very much a broad introduction to the winter environment rather than any specific or intensified skills development.  

Key elements of the day:

• To undertake a quality winter hill-walking day

• Introduction to additional personal and leadership skills for use in the winter environment

• Insight into the role of the Winter ML and Winter Mountain Leader Scheme 

Who’s it for?:

A day out in winter can be a challenging and highly rewarding experience.  Candidates need to be mountain fit and capable of walking with a rucksack for several hours.  Expect the day to last around 6-7 hours on the hill with ascent of between approximately 700-1000m.   Ideally candidates should hold the ML(summer) award.  Candidates who have undergone ML training may also attend as may WGL holders who can demonstrate that they also have experience of at least 20 quality mountain days.  In all cases candidates must be fit enough to undertake a mountain journey as described above.
